My annual mammogram was on December 3, 2014. A week later, while on our first vacation in two years, I receive a phone call from Dr. Wallner’s office saying my mammogram results showed a spot on my left breast and I need a second mammogram as soon as possible. Wow! What an extreme surprise. Since we weren’t in Dallas at the time, I asked the office to contact the imaging center for me to schedule my appointment at the imagining center for 3 days before Christmas. That second mammogram led to an ultrasound and a needle biopsy, so just before New Year’s, Dr. Wallner called me and explained it was ductal carcinoma and referred me to my surgical oncologist.

My surgeon’s name was Dr. Tuoc N. Dao, M.D. and my radiation oncologist’s name was Dr. Kesha Harris-Henderson, M.D. Both of these physicians were excellent—very caring and knowledgeable.

I was given many options for surgery and radiation. But my tumor was the size of a pencil eraser and I only wanted a lumpectomy. Whole breast radiation was completely scary to me and when the SAVI technology was presented to me, I jumped on that solution for radiation. Whole breast radiation seemed like overkill to me. It also helped my decision to go with SAVI that Dr. Dao highly recommended it.

I had never really heard about either treatment options, but one of my employees had treatment with SAVI about four years ago. Of course, due to her personal privacy she had never completely explained it to me.

The biggest benefit was the SAVI technology and treatment worked well with my personal and business objectives. I am a very strong willed and aggressive person. From the moment I heard about SAVI, I told everyone I was “kicking cancer’s a**!” The SAVI procedure appealed to my personal agenda to get it done quick and final.

At first, the SAVI device was not comfortable. I am a large busted gal and the device seemed to weigh down the entire breast. But by the first treatment, I had the comfort thing under control. My energy for the first two days of the treatment was absolutely normal and not effected at all. By the third day, I had to come home and take a nap prior to the afternoon treatment. The entire experience was handled professionally and I don’t think I could have gone through all those weeks of radiation.

My new mission is to make sure all women have consistent annual mammograms. I feel that I am a very lucky woman because my oncologist had knowledge to remove the tumor and I had an incredible support system praying and cheering me to victory. I would absolutely recommend this treatment plan to anyone who was eligible. I would also like to make sure that the patient knows to purchase several surgical bras prior to the surgery, and purchase either pajamas with button front tops or a few blouses with button fronts. Additionally take your time and get plenty of rest. I welcome contact from others researching their options or going through this journey.
