My breast surgeon at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ (my employer) recommended the SAVI for me. Our hospital has been offering the SAVI for a little over 2 years. I was a little nervous about having this in my breast, but it was a great alternative to 6 1/2 weeks of full breast radiation! I had a lumpectomy on July 22 at which time my surgeon placed the balloon expander. I had my SAVI device inserted on July 30. My CT scan on August 1 showed the SAVI my surgeon had inserted was too small, so I had that one removed and a larger one put in that same day. I felt no pain at either insertion or removal of the devices. The only discomfort I ever had was with the smaller one, because it kept moving around in my breast. Once the larger one was inserted, it fit snugly and the discomfort went away.

I began the radiation treatments on August 5 and had my SAVI removed on August 9. I felt great during the 5 days of treatment. I drove myself to each treatment twice a day. My radiation therapists and oncologists were so caring and knowledgeable. I am so glad I chose the SAVI device!

The removal on the last day of treatment was nothing! I had heard that it hurts when removed. I can honestly say…I didn’t even feel anything! The worst part (which is really not a big deal) was the no showering issue. Taking a bath and washing my hair in the sink was a small price to pay for a quick regimen of treatment. I returned to work 10 days after the removal of the SAVI and I feel great. Waiting for my Oncotype results to see if I will need Chemo. Fingers crossed!
