Treated with SAVI – August 2012
I’ve always been diligent about getting yearly mammograms and on June 26, 2012, I found out just what a good thing I’d been doing. A cyst was found which, after further image testing and biopsy, turned out to be invasive ductal carcinoma about 3mm in size—way before I would have felt it. Needless to say, my husband and I were stunned.
My surgeon, Dr. Caren Wilkie, immediately informed me about the SAVI catheter and said if I was a candidate, I would be done with radiation in a week with minimal side effects! I was up for that!
After my lumpectomy, I was grateful to learn that I had no lymph node involvement, my margins were clear and on August 22, 2012, the SAVI was painlessly inserted right in my surgeon’s office!
I began radiation August 27 and on August 31, the SAVI was painlessly removed. My surgeon was right, no swelling or redness of skin, just a little tired, that’s all! In fact, if it hadn’t been for the hematoma I developed under my arm at the area of my lymph node biopsy I would have had no pain at all. I didn’t even know the SAVI was there!
Because I’m triple negative and had a grade 3, poorly differentiated cancer, I’m on to chemotherapy, but I’d like to say, “Thanks SAVI for making this ‘bump in the road’ a little less bumpy!”
All my doctors and staff were so sweet and kind and really in my corner. Also, a big thanks to my wonderful husband who has been with me to all my appointments and treatments! We can’t wait to get our lives back to normal and with SAVI’s help, the wait is a little bit shorter!
