As soon as the doctor told me I had a lump, I knew it was cancer. Cancer runs in my family so I always figured it was just a matter of time before I got it. But I get mammograms every year, and I’m very lucky my cancer was caught early and that I had a very small tumor.

My doctor told me I had two options after surgery: 6 weeks of whole breast radiation or 5 days of partial breast radiation. I had a lot going on in my life at the time and 6 weeks of treatment would have been a huge burden, so I really pushed for the 5 day treatment. I have very small breasts and my cavity was close to my chest, so the doctor was concerned I wouldn’t be a candidate for APBI. But thank goodness for SAVI – it was perfect for me, and my doctor was thrilled that I was able to take advantage of the shorter treatment.

When I had the device implanted, I was a little scared, afraid of the possible pain I might experience, but in the end it was a piece of cake. I had a wonderful breast surgeon and it didn’t hurt at all going in. I had some discomfort during the week, but it was nothing major. I had a little fatigue, but other than that I had no side effects. I went right back to work the following Monday, as good as new.

I can’t say enough about SAVI. It’s the most amazing treatment I’ve ever heard of. It sounds strange, but even though I had cancer, it was a very uplifting experience. I look at this experience as another part of my adventure in life, and I hope that I can somehow help getting the word out about this amazing treatment. Thank you, SAVI – you probably saved my life.
