After my last annual mammogram I was told they saw something abnormal and scheduled a second one. It was my first experience with this center and I thought it must just be a mistake but my primary care physician confirmed a second mammogram would be necessary. When the second results came back my doctor confirmed I had breast cancer. The word “Cancer” has to be the most terrifying word you ever hear your doctor speak. To say I was devastated was an understatement. I cried for two days and just couldn’t understand how this could be happening to me. At age seventy-two I and never had surgery before and now I was facing a biopsy that would determine the next steps in my life. Breast cancer had never been diagnosed in my family before and we had no idea what to expect.

The biopsy was performed at Methodist Hospital in Mansfield. The team was comforting and caring and made me and my family feel confident that whatever the results were, they would be there and take care of me. Unfortunately the biopsy confirmed the cancer and the next course of action would be a lumpectomy, but I was comforted in the thought that the surgery would also be done at Methodist Mansfield by the same team that had taken such good care of me before. I was home the same day as my surgery and was surprised to feel no pain at all.

My surgery was successful and the biopsy said the cancer was noninvasive and my surgeon thought I would be a good candidate for a fairly new type of radiation treatment using a SAVI device. We were all happy to find out the radiation treatments would only go on for five days instead of several weeks. Before I left my surgeons office, the appointments were made to have the SAVI put in and the 10 radiation treatments. When the SAVI device was put in, I had no pain at all, no discomfort. It was in for 9 or 10 days and I could sleep, turn over—it wasn’t uncomfortable, which was unbelievable. I felt so lucky.

The biggest benefit of SAVI was the short duration of the treatments. They lasted for just five days and then it was over. My other options would have meant many weeks of treatments. I was really fortunate that my family took care of all my treatments, which was very comforting. Now, people comment all the time how great I look. I would recommend the SAVI to anyone who was a candidate. As odd as this may sound, it really was a positive experience.
