I was in Florida celebrating my 70th birthday when I felt a very small lump in my breast. I was due for a mammogram soon anyway. I went to see the doctor and soon after I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. I was already seeing an oncologist for something else and he immediately recommended the SAVI device. I hadn’t heard of SAVI before, so I brought it up with my surgeon. I consider myself very lucky that I found my cancer so early and was a candidate for SAVI radiation.

I had my lumpectomy surgery on September 14, 2011, and had the SAVI device put in shortly after that. I had a little discomfort when they put it in, but it wasn’t too bad. Sleeping was a little difficult that week because I usually sleep on my left side – instead I had to sleep on my back. I was a little nervous for the removal because I was afraid it would hurt, but I took some pain pills and didn’t feel a thing – absolutely no pain. During treatment and for a little while afterwards, I was really tired – but my energy came back pretty quickly. Some of my friends can’t understand how I feel so good so soon after finishing breast cancer treatment.

I’m so glad I listened to my oncologist. I like that SAVI took less time and didn’t seem to have as many side effects – those were both very important to me. I’m so thankful for this extraordinary device. Now I’m back to doing what I love best – dancing, walking and taking my Zumba class. Not too bad for a 70-year old woman!
