I have had a very positive experience even though I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Things happened so fast for me that I think my head is still spinning.

On February 18, I went in for my yearly mammogram checkup. That morning the technicians had been having trouble with all their mammogram machines. I went through the mammogram and never gave it another thought until I got a call saying they had to schedule an ultrasound. I didn’t think much about it because I remembered that they were having trouble with their machines and I assumed it was just a fluke. By March 5, I was having a biopsy on a small spot the size of an English pea. Three days later, my gynecologist told me that I had invasive carcinoma breast cancer.

My gynecologist scheduled an appointment with a breast surgeon, Dr. Micheline Hyacinthe and she ran me through several tests. All tests came back good and a lumpectomy was scheduled. The surgeon told me depending on the lymph node results, I might be a candidate for the SAVI procedure. She told me that I had the option of SAVI with only 10 radiation treatments or the regular radiation with 33 treatments lasting over six weeks. I told her I would rather just go through the 10 treatments.

My mom had breast cancer 11 years ago and had a lumpectomy, but she had to go through chemo and the 33 radiation treatments. Since her diagnosis, she has had a sister and niece with breast cancer and I also had a cousin on my dad’s side of the family with breast cancer.

After my lumpectomy, radiation oncologists Dr. Paul Anderson and Dr. Thomas Neumann put the SAVI device in for my radiation treatments. After I completed all 10 treatments, the SAVI device was removed. I felt great throughout the whole entire process and would recommend it to everyone that would be eligible. It has been a wonderful journey and I am cancer free. I feel very lucky to have gotten to experience the SAVI radiation procedure and I highly recommend it.
